ESL/EFL Links

Here are some links that I hope will be useful to anyone searching for ESL/EFL sites on the World Wide Web.

Of course, there are a near-infinite number of ESL web pages out there, and a lot of them are better and/or more extensive than mine. What I've tried to do is provide a little bit of information about each link below, rather than just compiling a huge list. I have actually visited each site below and briefly summarized what you can expect at each.

Feel free to e-mail me with any comments or corrections.

"What is ESL?" FAQ File

For anyone who has questions about teaching English, this unofficial Usenet FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions file) is chock-full of information. It answers questions such as "What is the difference between ESL and EFL?", "What is an RSA-Cambridge certificate?", "Where can I find M.A. TESL programs", and so on. It also has a long list of Internet resources and web sites, so it's well worth downloading.

ESL on Usenet

If you want to read ESL/EFL discussions on Usenet, check out the misc.education.language.english newsgroup.

TESL-EJ

The TESL Electronic Journal has extensive archives of TESL articles, Internet resources, and a very valuable list of links. Highly recommended! You can also subscribe to their electronic list: send an e-mail message with the body text "Subscribe TESLEJ-L FirstName LastName" to: listserv@cmsa.berkeley.edu.

The Internet TESL Journal

A monthly web magazine with articles, activities and lesson plans, and an extensive links list. This is a no-frills, high content site.

TESL-L mailing list

This is the preeminent electronic list for ESL/EFL teachers. Once you subscribe to TESL-L, you can subscribe to any of its subsidiary lists (such as the TESL Jobs list, the TESL K-12 list, etc.) To subscribe, send an e-mail message with the body text "Subscribe TESL-L FirstName LastName" to: listserv@cunyvm.cuny.edu

ERIC

Go here to search ERIC's gopher site for education resources, including ESL.

YAHOO! (English as a Second Language)

YAHOO!'s English as a Second Language search. Of course you can go to Yahoo! yourself and do your own search, but the above link will do it for you. :)

The ESLoop

This is a sort of directory for ESL web sites. You can browse the "loop" linearally, choose one of the sites on the loop at random, or search for specific topics.

TESOL

The home page of the TESOL international organization.

TOEFL

The home page for the official Test Of English as a Foreign Language organization. This will tell you everything you need to know about the test, including schedules and fees.

Aardvark's EFL Resources

A very well-organized UK site, with a user-friendly directory and a fantastic links list. This is one of the best directories I found to ESL/EFL resources elsewhere.

ESL Teacher Connection

This is a small, easy-to-navigate site with a collection of lesson plans and activities for teachers to try out and comment on. Good for a quick browse if you need some ideas for class activities.

Dave's ESL Cafe

Run by Dave Sterling, an ESL professional who writes a book about ESL on the Internet. This is one of the largest and most comprehensive ESL sites around. It has many resources for teachers and students. His list of links is huge, but unregulated (anyone can add a link, and some have nothing to do with ESL).

English as a Second Language Home Page

A non-commercial site hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It's designed for ESL students interested in computer-assisted English learning, but has many resources for teachers also.

TEFL Professional Network

This is a commercial organization that recruits for English schools, and allows ESL/EFL teachers to register and search through their job postings, free of charge. They also have a bulletin board and a number of professional course listings.

Planet English

A commercial site that provides a lot of activities for teachers and students, chat rooms, catalogs, job postings, etc. If you have ESL activities or books to publish, they may be interested in paying you to create materials online.

Andrea Lund's ESL/EFL Page

Andrea Lund is an EFL teacher in Norway. If you are interested in English in Norway, this is definitely the place to go, but she has a lot of resources for ESL/EFL students and teachers everywhere.

Volterre-FR English and French Language Resources

This site in France offers lots of ESL/EFL resources, with an emphasis on EFL for French speakers, naturally. If you can read French, this would be a good place to visit.

Linguistic Funland TESL Page

Another privately-maintained site with many useful links.

University of Maryland Baltimore County (ESOL/Bilingual Program)

I earned my M.A. in Instructional Systems Development with a TESOL concentration at UMBC, so here's a link to UMBC's TESOL department.

Doug's Korean Connection

Someone else who has lived and worked in Korea. Has quite a few warnings about conditions there.
