This is a roster of PCs and NPCs in VSF. It will be updated as often as the GM gets around to it.
As usual, the information below is what is "common knowledge," and is not necessarily true...
Iñigo López de Mendoza is one of the eldest vampires in California. He was born to an aristocratic Castillian family sometime in the 17th century, came to Mexico on royal assignment, and was Embraced there by another Ventrue descended from Spanish nobility. He came north with the missionaries, creating numerous childer who still live throughout California. He arrived in San Francisco in the 18th century and has resided there ever since.
That's the official story. Privately, some Kindred question the Prince's autobiographical account. There were dozens of "Iñigo López de Mendoza"s in medieval Spain, but historians have had a difficult time finding any who came to Mexico in the 17th century. And Iñigo has never named his esteemed elder Sire... and most of the Camarilla elders who once lived in Mexico were exterminated by the Sabbat in the 19th or early 20th century.
Mendoza is a proud, arrogant man who clearly misses the days of Alta California, and still runs San Francisco as if he were a Californio rancher. He basks in the respect of his fellow Ventrue and demands respect from other Kindred as well. The fact that he is personally very powerful and commands vast resources in the Bay Area keeps any Kindred from being insolent or defiant... to his face.
Iñigo has a lot of childer still in California, though many of them died when the Sabbat moved into Southern California. He tried to set up one of his childer as the Prince of San Jose, but none of his "offspring" were able to command the necessary respect from their fellow Kindred. Instead, Iñigo settled for another Ventrue supported by the elders back East. It is known that Iñigo resents the snobbery of the East Coast Ventrue, and truly desires to be respected by the Ventrue Elders in Europe. Unfortunately, while he is an "elder" by California standards, to European Kindred, he is barely more than a Neonate.
Miguel is Iñigo's eldest surviving childe still living in the Bay Area. The Prince Embraced this descendant of Spanish nobility in 1867, and for most of a century, Miguel was the Prince's right-hand man, and eventually was formally made Primogen of the Ventrue clan after he had been serving as de facto Primogen for decades. Other Kindred grumbled about the Prince cementing his absolute hold on the city by making his own childe a Primogen, but no one was able to dispute Miguel's position.
However, Miguel is now out of favor in his Sire's court, and is considered, ironically, the weakest of the Primogen, politically (except perhaps for Kolya Drivakis, as the Gangrel Primogen almost never comes to the City.) Iñigo overreached himself when he tried to install Miguel as Prince of San Jose, and was rebuffed, and the Prince blames Miguel for that failure.
Miguel now lives in a quiet house in Noe Valley, and rarely ventures out, preferring to conduct all his business through his ghouls.
Eduardo is actually Miguel Canstrella's great-grandson, as Miguel liked to keep his family around as a resource, and during the jockeying for the position of Prince of San Jose in the late 60s, Miguel made his grandson a ghoul. Coming from a wealthy family, Eduardo served in Vietnam as a Marine, and spent most of the last 40 years as Miguel's, and then the Prince's, ghoul. Only recently (about 5 years ago), Iñigo decided to Embrace Eduardo, and after only four years as a Childe, presented Eduardo to Kindred society as a Neonate. He now lives with another of the Prince's former ghouls, and still does Mendoza's bidding.
One of the younger Ventrue in San Francisco. A banker from the East Coast, he arrived in SF in the 80s. He is wealthy and manages a lot of the Ventrue's money on the West Coast, though Mendoza keeps a close eye on him, fearing he may be a spy for the elders back East.
Although not a childe of Iñigo López de Mendoza, Antonio (his close associates -- he has no friends -- call him "Javier") has at least pretended to respect the Prince of San Francisco for decades. Sired early in the 19th century by a Ventrue who once owned large tracts of land in what is now the Silicon Valley, Antonio is Californiano by birth. Appointing another Ventrue of Latino heritage was a concession to Iñigo, but the Elders who supported him for the position deliberately chose someone from outside Iñigo's bloodline. Antonio had already established himself as an unusually ruthless Ventrue when he organized a posse of fellow Ventrue and waged a "gang war" against the Brujah in the South Bay in the 40s. After permanently crippling Brujah power in the Bay Area, his own star was clearly on the rise, but the Brujah haven't forgotten. While they resent the Prince of San Francisco, they hate the Prince of San Jose... even if they are not currently waging open war against him.
Antonio appears young, dark, and handsome, and is still something of a "ladies man" -- he prefers to feed on young, beautiful Latinas. (Whether or not that reflects his Ventrue dietary limitation, or merely a personal preference, is unknown.) and is much more stylish and hip than the Prince of San Francisco. He has a quick wit and a dark sense of humor, but in many ways is even more obsessed than Iñigo about maintaning respect. The Prince of San Francisco will have a vampire who offends him banished from the city or sent to do some menial task; the Prince of San Jose is more likely to order offenders staked out for the sun.
Karl has been in San Jose since shortly after he was Embraced by a European vampire at the end of World War II. He is the same generation as Prince Aguilar, though much younger chronologically. While his seeming lack of ambition has often been commented on, Karl seems to be content to serve the Prince, and Aguilar trusts him, though they do not appear to be truly friends.
Born of Iraqi parents who sent Faisal to Britain in the 30s, Faisal was a hedonistic youth with a love for wine, women, and food, and was Embraced by an English Toreador at Oxford. He and his Sire traveled the world for a while, but Faisal eventually landed on the shores of the San Francisco Bay, and decided to stay. Although he was outwardly just a hedonist, Faisal has a very sharp eye for talent, and won respect among the other Toreadors of San Francisco by accurately predicting trend after trend and picking a large number of gifted artists and musicians to watch, who later became recognized by mortal society for their gifts. Meanwhile, Faisal was also carving himself a little niche in the city, and maneuvering to assume "leadership" of the Toreador, which he accomplished in the 60s by humiliating and discrediting the only Toreador of an older generation.
Now a Primogen, Faisal is actually looked down on by some Toreador for having no "artistic" talent of his own, but he remains very good at spotting trends, and talent. It is this skill that makes his advice valuable to the Prince, but he rarely puts all his cards on the table, and Faisal has been engaged in a gradual and subtle power struggle with Iñigo for over three decades now. Most of the other Toreador support Faisal and regard themselves as the true leaders of San Francisco, for while the Ventrue have more money, the Toreador are pretty wealthy themselves, and much more active among the trendy, hip, and mediagenic in San Francisco.
Born in 1932, Cynthia Corey ("CC" to her friends) was a Miss America contestant in 1950, and became an aspiring actress who appeared in a few movies in the 50s, and made a more successful career out of modeling and fashion design. It was the latter talent that attracted her Sire, who was at that time the Toreador Primogen of San Francisco. Cynthia was Embraced in 1958, at the peak of her beauty and grace. Although she adapted surprisingly well to the vampire life, her Sire never realized the depths of her resentment for being taken away from her mortal life. Not until about 10 years later, anyway, when she conspired with Faisal Gamal to humiliate him and drive him out of California in disgrace.
Cynthia is both Faisal's most important ally and his greatest rival within the clan. On the surface, she is content to hold court at one of her salons and throw parties for beautiful Kindred and mortals, but she is rumored to have ambitions of her own. Cynthia owns a chain of upscale clothing stores, a modeling agency, and a theater. With her own Childe now providing additional resources and influence in San Francisco, some Kindred think Cynthia and Faisal are being played against one another by the Prince.
Lilith Van Ness's delusion sometimes prompts her to chat with Cynthia about their shared "history" in Hollywood, and even speak of films they supposedly starred together in. Cynthia finds this extremely annoying, but knows better than to contradict the Malkavian Primogen to her face.
Cynthia Corey's childe, the owner of a goth nightclub called The Catacombs and heir to a sizeable fortune from his mortal parents (deceased before he was Embraced), Jayden appears to be a dutiful neonate who often attends on his Sire when he is not playing in his band or managing his club. Many Kindred were surprised when the Prince gave Cynthia permission to create Progeny, and suspected he was trying to sap the Toreador Primogen, Faisal Gamal, of some of his influence.
Jonah Turenne is sociable and likeable, the sort of Toreador who has friends among all elements of Kindred society. He's one of the city's foremost gossip-mongers, a clotheshorse and a party animal. Being so popular, many Kindred forget that his origins are unknown, and that he has actually been in the city longer than any other Toreador, even the Primogen. He came to California shortly after the Great Quake, at the behest of the previous Toreador Primogen of San Francisco, and helped build the Toreador into a more formidable force in the city. Apparently his loyalty to his patron was not great, since he remained in the city after Faisal and Cynthia drove the other elder away.
Tracy was a singer, pianist, and composer when a Toreador who had fallen in love with her voice Embraced her. Unfortunately, after becoming undead, her voice lost some of its essential qualities, and she stopped singing entirely, and rarely plays. Nonetheless, she remains a patron of San Francisco's arts.
Born in 1880 in England, of an occult family, Beatrix was Embraced around 1900, and came to the U.s. in the 20s to foster an occult revival in the U.S. that might provide recruiting grounds for the Tremere. In 1945, after the Regent of the San Francisco Chantry was killed by a vampire hunter, Beatrix was sent to take over. She is very young for a Primogen and Regent, and many think that the arrival of Josef Mayr from Vienna indicates a lack of confidence on the part of the Elders... though why they would consider replacing her now, after she has been Regent for nearly 60 years, is not clear.
Dante is Beatrix's childe, very recently Embraced. He is rumored to be a somewhat uncooperative Childre, and involved in a relationship with Jayden.
Josef Mayr came to San Francisco from Vienna with one of his childer only a few years ago. The Tremere do not, of course, discuss internal clan business with outsiders, but everyone knows that if Vienna felt a need to send someone to San Francisco, it means something. Mayr is reportedly several centuries old, despite being of a later generation than Edward Quarles.
Next to Beatrix and Josef, Silas is the most senior Tremere in the Bay Area, and has been in the area longer than either of them. He is a "grand-childe" of the former Primogen, whom Beatrix replaced. Silas originally came from the Midwest; his Sire Embraced him while travelling from the East coast to the West, towards the end of 19th century. Silas is tall, lean, and prune-faced, and very conservative, perhaps a result of his Evangelical Christian background. He no longer practices any religion, but remains an adherent to discipline and tradition. Silas lives in Livermore, in Alameda County.
An engineer who had an obsessive interest in the occult, Robert was Embraced in the early 90s during a "recruitment drive" to increase the Tremeres' technological savvy. This makes him somewhat disfavored by traditionalists like Josef Mayr. He continues to work as a consultant in Silicon Valley. Robert lives in Santa Clara.
Sebastian is Josef Mayr's childe, acknowledged as a Neonate only just before the two of them came to San Francisco a couple of years ago. He was Embraced in London while a student, in 2000. Being a student of the driven and efficient Mayr might explain why he has "advanced" so quickly in Tremere society, and also why he is so obsessively disciplined himself. He specializes in blood magic.
Most of the clans have selected separate Primogens for San Francisco and San Jose, but all the Brujah in the Bay Area answer to Lucas Gorrell. An Irishman who came to San Francisco with the 49ers, "Lucas" is not his original given name (but he hasn't told anyone what it is). He was Embraced in 1851, and for years after becoming a vampire, ambitiously tried to organize his fellow Brujah and even members of other clans under his leadership. However, while he's a great fighter and even moderately charismatic, Lucas has few organizational skills and no business sense, so the Brujah inevitably lost the power struggle in Northern California to the Ventrue. Most of Lucas's close friends were killed in the 1940s when he came out the loser in a war against Antonio Javier Aguilar, now the Prince of San Jose. Lucas himself survived, but moved to San Francisco, and then left San Francisco (partly by choice, partly because Iñigo "encouraged" him to leave) in 1960, after Aguilar secured his position as Prince of San Jose.
Lucas now has his lair in Redwood City, almost equidistant between San Francisco and San Jose (but technically within Aguilar's domain). He welcomes any Brujah to his small estate, and is friendly to most other vampires (except Ventrue, and even they he will tolerate if they seem unfriendly to the Princes).
While there is no "agreement," tacit or otherwise, between Aguilar and Gorrell, the Prince of San Jose does not try to harrass the Brujah Primogen because Brujah are some of the best soldiers in the Bay Area and Aguilar needs them when the Sabbat comes to town... and as long as Gorrell is left unmolested, other Brujah (the important ones, anyway) seem willing to do their duty for the Camarilla.
Still, Aguilar is wary... after all, what kind of a Brujah "settles down" on an estate... especially in a nice, whitebread community like Redwood City?
Hell Haggerty is known to have arrived in San Francisco sometime around 1850, and was a member of the notorious Australian gang, the "Sydney Ducks," which terrorized San Francisco in the middle of the 19th century. He has been much less aggressive than Lucas in opposing the Ventrue, and perhaps for that reason, Mendoza hasn't tried to force this Brujah out. Hell owns several adult bookstores, a porn studio, some massage parlors, and businesses of that ilk in San Francisco, but is most often found at his bar, "The Golden Rule."
A recent arrival from Texas, now working for Hell. He has been given permission by the Prince to stay in San Francisco.
Her birth name is Betty Kirkpatrick (born 1911), but she won't answer to that. Lilith lives in a delusional, glamorous world that revolves around her, where she is loved and adored and revered by all. Among her many varying delusions is the conviction that she is an Antediluvian, and she will frequently confide in visitors, in hushed tones, that she actually controls everything in San Francisco, but she lets Iñigo believe he runs things. She also believes she is a former movie star whose estate (a mouldering mansion on one of San Francisco's hills) was purchased while she was still alive, and the premiere actress of the 40s and 50s. She asks visitors if they have ever been to Hollywood, if they have seen her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and which of her movies is their favorite.
She will become furious if contradicted on any of her delusions, but can fly into a violent rage, or even Frenzy, if told she was never a movie star.
The reality is that Betty Kirkpatrick went to Los Angeles in the 30s trying to become a star. She never made it onto a single film, even as an extra, but she did get conned and used by a lot of men, and spent a lot of time on "casting couches," until by 1950 the aging never-was had become a pathetic, delusional shell of her former self. That was when a Malkavian decided to Embrace her.
Upon becoming a vampire, Betty began constructing an even more elaborate delusional world, and migrated north to San Francisco where she had decided she would "retire" after her long and glorious film career. What she actually did was murder an entire family of wealthy San Franciscans and then take over their family fortune (with a little Dominate used on their lawyer and next-of-kin).
Maybe the Prince of San Francisco pitied her, or maybe he realized that while "Lilith" was not the oldest Malkavian in the city, she was the only one who had rooted herself in one place, and moreover, she seemed to have become a minor celebrity in her clan; her fellow Malkavians had no problem going along with her delusions and sometimes gathered at her estate for "Lilith Van Ness movie nights." Thus she became the Malkavian Primogen of San Francisco.
Aside from her fantasy world, Lilith is actually quite bright and perceptive, and true to the suspicions many vampires have about Malkavians, knows a lot more about Kindred politics in the Bay Area than one might think. Other Malkavians in the city respect her (as much as Malkavians "respect" anyone), and with her money, which she still makes use of at odd times and sometimes in a surprisingly effective manner, even non-Malkavians sometimes come to her for assistance.
"Siblings" with Michael Pickering, Phoebe arrived in San Francisco several years ago, introduced to the Prince by her Sire, Anastasie Beaumont. Mendoza was not overly keen on the arrival of two new Malkavians, but permitted Phoebe and Michael to move in to the city. Phoebe makes a living as a psychic and apparently believes herself to be a prophet of some kind. Her Sire is believed to be from a rather prestigious bloodline, for a Malkavian.
"Siblings" with Phoebe Beaumont, Michael arrived in San Francisco with Pheobe and their mutual Sire, Anastasie Beaumont. Michael still works as a psychologist in the city, and tends to remain low-profile, making him and Phoebe among the better-behaved Malkavians in the Bay Area.
Kolya Drivakis is sometimes referred to sarcastically as the "Prince of Gilroy." He does remain mostly in the Gilroy area, south of San Jose, where he and his fellow Gangrel run wild in the woods, hills, and beaches stretching from Gilroy to Santa Cruz. Since few other vampires like this region, where lupines are rumored to also be active, Kolya is for all practical purposes the "Prince" of the region... but he never uses any such title, and at least nominally accepts Aguilar's authority.
As one of the eldest vampires in Northern California, Kolya commands a great deal of respect, especially since he and his Gangrel are often the first to engage raiding Sabbat vampires. Kolya very rarely goes as far north as San Jose, let alone San Francisco, but even the Gangrel living in the northern counties are more likely to be loyal to Kolya than to either Mendoza or Aguilar.
Herbert is the childe of the previous Nosferatu Primogen, who made the mistake of living in an above-ground haven, which burned up in the fires following the Great Quake of 1906. Herbert had been a ne'er-do-well criminal who preyed on San Francisco's lower classes in the late 19th century. After his Sire Embraced him, Herbert followed the pattern of many Nosferatu, becoming a more sociable and responsible "person," and when his Sire died, Herbert assumed leadership of the Nosferatu in the Bay Area. None of his fellow subterranean dwellers contested his right to be Primogen.
It is little talked about, but well known, that Herbert is now possibly the vampire of lowest Generation in San Francisco. Since Iñigo is known to be very prideful where Generation is concerned, it no doubt galls him no end that a Nosferatu is actually his "senior." Needless to say, Herbert does not frequently enjoy the Prince's hospitality.
A street urchin with a deformed leg, Herbert Embraced Jenny in 1944, when she was only 12 years old, and dying of pneumonia. He didn't actually have the Prince's permission to do it, but it was nearly five years before Iñigo found out about Jenny! Iñigo found it more convenient to never raise the issue, and so no one does. Herbert is known to be quite fond of his Childe, so any vampire who harms Jenny will find himself the target of every Nosferatu in the Bay Area.
Surprisingly, Jenny became an avid reader after her Embrace, now that she had the time and ability to learn. She has now become an unoffocial "historian" for the Kindred of San Francisco, and has quite a library of musty archives and mouldering old books piled up in her haven beneath the city. She haunts the city's libraries and bookstores after hours, and is the one to ask if any vampire wants to know something about the history of San Francisco's Kine or Kindred.
Philip Anglesey is Jenny Black's childe. Like Jenny, it's believed that Philip was Embraced without getting the Prince's permission first. Once again, the Prince has found it more convenient to ignore such transgressions by the Nosferatu. He is almost never seen outside of the tunnels beneath the city, and is known to be the Nosferatu's "hacker," spending most of his time information-gathering online.
The Prince has little tolerance for Caitiff, banishing them all to areas outside San Francisco's city limits. The one exception is a source of puzzlement to many Kindred, but no one questions either Gabriel or Iñigo about their unusual arrangement.
Gabriel runs a nightclub called Archangel, which actually serves as a secondary Elysium for the city. The Prince designated Archangel an Elysium several years ago, not long after Gabriel arrived in the city. For the most part, younger and/or hipper vampires come here.... Iñigo and his coterie prefer the older Elysium one of his childer has maintained for nearly two centuries at a Nob Hill mansion.
